2018 Update: I often find myself playing 1 line at a time when I’m looking to kill time at the casino. Though recently I’ve stumbled upon some new games that actually make this somewhat profitable. The key here is to find games with regular bonuses that you can take advantage of, even if you only are bidding on one or 5 lines.
In the Royal Egypt game, one of the symbols is a coin that can appear on each reel. This coin then gets collected at the top of the screen per reel, and whenever a reel has 2 coins, you get 2 spins where that entire reel is wild! As you can imagine, it’s possible to get multiple wild reels happening at the same time, which can give you a big win despite only playing 5 lines at a time (the minimum on this machine).
Update: One of my goals since writing this post was to trigger a free spins bonus while bidding on only 1 line. I accomplished this on a Zeus machine where each of the trigger symbols did not appear on the line I was bidding on, but it still triggered the bonus. Unfortunately the bonus only pays out on the same number of lines as your last bid, so I had a bunch of free spins on one line which yielded no winnings 🙁 I would also like to recommend the Cleopatra slot machine game as a good one to try bidding a single line on, as it has many winning combinations that need only 2 adjacent symbols.
This week I wanted to try a different strategy at the casino. Conventional slot machine strategy is to always bet the maximum amount possible, so you win the maximum jackpot if you are lucky enough to get the right winning combinations. At the very least, you should always bet on every line available, so you don’t miss out on any winners.
I wanted to do the complete opposite, and only play 1 line per spin, meaning I would only be betting $0.01. Have I discovered a new slot machine secret?
My working theory, is that when you are betting all lines (say 30 credits per spin for example) every time you win 5-25 credits, you are still losing overall. However if you were to only bet 1 credit per spin, every single win would be at least twice your bet. Obviously it would take a very very very long time to win any substantial jackpot, but this was more about overall profitability, and frankly I was curious how it would play out!
I decided to play the Timber Wolf slot machine first. One thing I liked about this game is that there are many winning combinations where you only have to match 2 in a row. Initially it went as you’d expect, a whole lot of spins with no winnings. After about my 40th spin, I matched 3 in a row and won 40 credits, bringing my back to my starting total. I continued to play for about a half hour and ended up back where I started ($20, or 2000 credits).
Next I tried the Zeus game, again only playing one line at a time. Zeus only had 1 way to match 2 in a row to win, so it was much harder with this slot strategy. After another half hour, I was down about 150 credits with no noticeable wins.
A quick aside on the Zeus slot machine game. I did play it with full lines, and even reached the 10 free spin bonus round. On that round of 10 spins, I won a grand total of 20 credits. I’ve never won so few credits on a free spin/bonus round before. I will most likely avoid this game in the future!
I never expected this to yield high payouts, so it was more of an experiment than a true slot machine strategy. I would not recommend it if you are trying to win a jackpot, and it can get pretty boring. That being said however, if you ever need to just kill time in a Casino and don’t want to spend any real money, this would be a great way to do it. Try this strategy for free by playing slots online on Facebook.
I do have a few unanswered questions however, first, many machines (including the Zeus game) give bonus spins when 3 or more symbols appear anywhere on any of the reels (scattered). If I’m only betting on one line and they appear on other lines, would I win the bonus games? Or do they have to be on live lines. The rules in each game I’ve read are fairly unclear on this. I’m also curious to go in with 2000 credits and play 1 line per spin until I’m either out of credits or won a jackpot. I wonder how long that would take, and if they would let me watch Netflix on my phone while I attempt it.
Update: A New Strategy
After discussing my findings with a friend, he hipped me to a strategy where you would only bid on one line, however you would select the maximum bid. That way, if you do happen to match 3 in a row, your payout is significantly larger. In my original experiment, it took about 40 spins before I matched 3 in a row, though since then, often I’ve matched 3 in a row within the first 5-10 spins. At 40 spins this is not a good strategy, but if you luck out in the first few spins I could see it working out. I will try this strategy out and report back.
Until next time…..Happy Spinning!
